This first talk this morning was by Bryan Chapell – the Source of Christ-Centred Preaching from 2 Timothy 3:10-4:2. The talk was given at the recent Gospel Coalition 2009 Conference as well. So if you are interested, you can watch the video online.

One really good point from his talk – The Word of God is true and beneficial to us as it rescues us from the idolatry of our own voice and from the isolation of ourselves. This is really profound!

His second talk (more a lecture) was in the afternoon – The Heart of a Christ-centered Message. He talked about FCF (fallen condition focus), which is from his well-known book “Christ-centered Preaching”, and Biblical theology. Although these are not completely new to me, I found it was really helpful. As I was listening, I was reflecting what I’ve recently preached on Acts and using his lecture as a mirror to see if my sermon is still on a right track.

He also gave some warnings to the preacher. His last point was so true – “What we communicate with the best of motives to help change damaging behaviours and attitudes actually hurts others if Christ is absent. People cannot do what they are told to do apart from him, causing them either to dispair of hope or to pretend to be holy.” If preaching without Jesus, this will be the damage that we will cause to our people.
